Tribes and Climate Change, Protecting the Circle

Teachers everywhere are invited to download this new curriculum here as well as this classroom version of the new video, “Climate Story”.

Through the following chapters, this curriculum

introduces students to Indian Country and the

impacts of climate change on the tribes, as well as their response:

1. The Causes and Effects of Climate Change

2. The Glaciers are Melting, the Salmon are Dying

3. The Tribal Response to Climate Change

4. Our Mother Earth

Tribes did not cause climate change, but being true to their history and tradition, they are leaders in the effort to reduce its impacts. The curriculum reaches out to students in a way that engages their own lives and helps them understand that each and every one of them is part of “the circle”.

The circle has always been an integral part of indigenous belief, whether related to the life cycle of salmon or the everlasting life of our planet. We are all part of the circle.
